subsequently identified as that of an agent
provocateur of the Canton Government.
Information
provided by this man had led to the arrest and
execution of certain members of the Young Communist
group on their way to Kwangsi province; and his
murder was with reason laid at the door of this
organisation.

Further investigations led to the discovery
of a quantity of Communist literature in the possession of three women and two men believed to be
members of the Young Communists; and, although no
evidence could be found to connect them with the
murder, the documents together with similar papers
from other sources throw considerable light on the
recent developments of the Communist movement in
China. I enclose a precis of the contents of two
printed booklets which are evidently intended for
the use of Communist propagandists.
These are
largely self explanatory; but two points in particular may be noted. One is the promptness with which they appeared the date of one is the 18th of July, less

than a week following the first step taken by the
Chinese in Manchuria and the evidence, taken in
conjunction with similar movements in other countries, of a very efficient system of inter-communication between Communist organisations throughout the world.
